February 02 - Many South Africans will buy a used car, excuse me a pre-owned vehicle in 2007, and there are a number of car insurance questions you should know the answers to before you take the plunge. Fortunately we have those answers.
What happens if that car gets stolen? This is South Africa after all, so the question is quite a practical one to ponder. The worst mistake you can make is to leave the legal ownership of the car in the name of the former owner, and along with that to allow the former owner to continue to pay the insurance.
These informal arrangements are commonplace in South Africa and the result is that the new owner of the used car is being exploited. In the event that something happens to the car, say it is stolen or written off, the insurance company will reject any claim.
The insurance company needs to know who the primary driver is, what the car is being used for, and where the car is located. A new owner can change all those factors, and so the insurance policy would change as well.
How do I register the car in my name? The easiest way to do this would be to use a finance company when purchasing the vehicle. If you do this then it is possible to get that car in your name right away. If the transaction is private then it will be trickier to achieve this.
Make sure that you have your own insurance policy in your name for the car that you drive. It will make your life a lot simpler and cheaper should anything happen to that car.
