May 22 - BrokerNet, the personal accident and health insurance brokers, have
created a tailor-made restaurant insurance policy to give waiters and
other restaurant workers the option to enjoy maximum coverage in case of injury
or even death.
Initiated by the country's non-profit Restaurateurs Association of South
Africa, the restaurant insurance will allow owners to safeguard their staff
through policies that start at as little as R27 a month.
The Director of BrokerNet, Sollie Sols explained the motive behind the
creation of an exclusive restaurant insurance. "In general, waiters are rather
vulnerable," he said. "Their wages are low, they have difficult hours of work,
and the risk of being injured on duty are reasonably high."
"RASA has been looking for a tailor-made policy with adequate coverage for
quite some time," continued Stols. "BrokerNet researched the matter and then
structured this unique policy to suit the very specific needs of the restaurant
industry. It is a first for South Africa and provides the industry with
incredible peace of mind."
Both restaurant owners and their workers benefit from this unique insurance
service. On the one hand, it protects restaurateurs from claims against them by
workers who are injured while on duty, and on the other hand, it pays out
damages to workers who are hurt, even on their way to and from their place of
employment.
According to BrokerNet, all workers can be insured collectively on one
policy, making for hassle-free paperwork.
RASA, which acts in the interest of restaurateurs around the country,
currently has membership of 130, with the number growing all the time.
