March 27 - Here are five of our top tips to help you the next time you have to make a claim from your insurance provider in South Africa. South African short-term insurance companies offer some fantastic products and coverage, but ignorance on our part and errors can cost the average consumer a bundle. Don't let this happen to you.
1. Make sure your premiums are as low as they should be. Get quotes for your motor car insurance and home insurance from several insurance companies. Look at insuring direct and compare it to using an insurance broker. See where you save more.
2. If you have to make a claim do it as soon as possible. If you wait to long it may no longer be valid.
3. Keep detailed notes and copies of all your correspondence with insurance companies. Do not assume that they will have all your records when the time comes.
4. Don't agree to the final claim amount without consulting a second opinion. And if the insurance company flat out rejects your claim don't just accept it. You have the option to complain and millions of rands is recovered on an annual basis in this manner.
5. Review your coverage every year. Do you still have enough coverage, or perhaps you have too much? You could save money by switching providers or changing your existing policy, so don't just ignore it.
