June 18 - South African holiday insurance is an essential component of any trip you're planning to this incredible vacation destination, but there are a few extras you will need to consider, and we have listed the most important tips right here for all prospective travellers to SA.
Overseas vacationers usually take out travel insurance because it's the smart thing to do but when you come to South Africa insurance is common sense. While nothing untoward happens to the vast majority of visitors to South Africa and there is certainly no need to worry about your visit, it is still prudent to take out extra holiday insurance.
You need to modify your travel insurance policy to make sure that your individual belongings are also insured when visiting SA. Your camera, Blackberry, valuables such as jewellery, and even your clothes should all be itemized in the event that they are stolen.
Basic travel insurance will pay you a lump sum unless you take this additional precaution, and the amount of compensation will not equal what has been lost. So individual item insurance is a must. They can be added to the all risks section of your policy.
Do not decide to explore areas "off the beaten path" on your visit to South Africa. Most areas of the country are safe but there are neighbourhoods and areas that are not safe - ask the locals at your hotel or travel guides where you should go.
You can take out travel insurance for a few hundred rand (for a two week trip) and it could save you hundreds of thousands if you face a medical emergency.
Finally you need to raise your levels of self-awareness in South Africa. We're not advocating paranoia here, but you do need to understand that glaring tourists are a target - so keep your moonpacks at home and don't wear the digital camera around your neck. Keep valuables in the hotel safe whenever possible and just be aware of your surroundings.
