10 July - The crime statistics for South Africa for the last year are sobering at best and depressing at worst. The government can cherry-pick specific stats to show progress (the number of rapes has decreased from the previous year, but there were still more than 50,000 reported cases in a single year), but the overall picture is gloomy.
The number of vehicles stolen rose slightly and shows no signs of improvement and the number of residential burglaries was at nearly 250,000 in the last year. The message this sends to all of us is clear - do not ignore car insurance or home insurance because the possibility of crime impacting your life is very real.
The worst stat of all of course was the number of murders in SA, which rose significantly, and remains the worst in the world per capita. If you have any financially dependent family members it is incumbent upon you to make sure that you have adequate life insurance.
This in turn has led, understandably, to a decrease in business confidence to its lowest number in the past eleven months. With many forms of violent crime on the rise, including those affecting businesses, these statistics overwhelmed the many positive economic indicators currently in play.
In times like these please ensure that you have comprehensive coverage for your family and yourself. Life insurance as well as short-term insurance are both essential especially when the disruptive elements in this wonderful country show no signs of abating or giving us any peace.
