August 10 - ACE Insurance, one of the world's leading insurance and reinsurance firms has opened an office in South Africa increasing the company's global infrastructure to include offices in over 50 countries and a workforce of more than 9000 people. Scott Pickering, the previous head of ACE Insurance South East Asian operations and New Zealand, has been appointed CEO of ACE Insurance South Africa. It will be Pickering's responsibility to introduce and build the ACE Insurance brand in South Africa, focusing initially on the South African corporate sector, which includes export products liability, large general liability, property coverage, directors and officers liability coverage and professional indemnity. Said Pickering, 'We have watched South Africa's economic progress over the past 10 years with great interest and are very pleased with the progress made. In fact we thought the timing was ideal to enter the South African insurance market, starting off by offering risk solutions to the corporate sector, particularly those with pan-African and global ambitions. 'As South African companies expand overseas, ACE Insurance can offer them years of global expertise in risk management as well as underwriting risks. In addition, South Africa is an ideal platform from which to access the greater African market,' he said. Pickering also went on to say that ACE Insurance South Africa eventually plans to expand into the South African public insurance sector by forming partnerships with leading South African organisations, including banks, credit card companies and cell phone companies.
