Rising Power Outages Impact SA Insurance |

2 July - The recent chilly weather has led to an unprecedented surge in the consumption of electricity, which in turn means more power outages. If your home is robbed during a blackout - a failry common occurrence since burglars know that home alarms will not function - will your South African home insurance provider honour the policy? It is a crucial question and at least two major SA home insurers, Hollard Insurance and Dial Direct have now stated publicly that they will indeed back up their policyholders. The onus is on you to make sure that your alarm system is working and switched on at all times when your home is vacant. If you were negligent in any way then the insurance provider will not pay out your claim, but fortunately the spate of power outages is due to Eskom's negligence, not yours. A Dial Direct spokeswoman was quoted in the Business Day online as saying that policyholders would receive the "benefit of the doubt" if property was stolen during a loss of power. If your property is damaged during a power outage or a power surge that might be a different matter. Again, Dial Direct has promised to pay out claims caused by fire damage as a result of power outages - say if an electrical item malfunctions when it switches back on when power is restored. If your TV or computer is damaged by a surge, however, you will have to make sure that your policy covers this specifically. Right now with Eskom's woes showing no sign of abating, it is a good idea to check this out!
