OUTsurance gives the impression of being a maverick, independent insurance company, targeting those people who want their insurers to be cool and hip. The reality of the situation is that they are part of a large corporation known as RMBH/FirstRand. This behemoth is one the best-known and largest South African financial service groups. OUTsurance developed a concept called OUTbonus in an attempt to appeal to the new generation of clients who want their insurance as colourful as they think they are. OUTsurance launched in February 1998 and thanks to an aggressive and novel marketing campaign they soon won over the public with a flashy approach that highlighted a wide variety of products offered by this short-term insurance provider. The business model behind OUTsurance is straightforward and has proved very successful. The company slogan, namely "that you always get something out" has definitely had an impact. As of the start of 2000 OUTsurance merged with First National Insurance. This stabilized OUTsurance and leaves them looking solid going forward. They also became a big player in offering homeowners insurance to existing account holders who had already financed their bond through another arm of the parent company. Interestingly enough, Dial Direct Insurance, who also specialise in household insurance, recently had independent research conducted to identify which is the most popular of the three alternative cash-back ?Bonus? schemes that are currently offered by short-term insurance providers. The research sample was gathered on a national basis and consisted of consumers who had bought short-term insurance. The results were not surprising to those of us who have dealt with Dial Direct in the past. The survey found that no less than 65% of all consumers polled preferred the Dial Direct Bucks Back Bonus. In addition, an independent statistician proved that Dial Direct ultimately paid out substantially more than its two major competitors in terms of cash back bonuses.
