February 2 - The South African Rugby Players Association (SARPA),
recognizing the importance of protecting its members' health and dental needs,
announced this week that it will be offering all professional rugby players a
new sports protection policy, the Denis Sports Protector Plan.
The unique policy cover injuries that occurred during practice sessions or
matches, and provides dental protection in five different categories.
In addition, Momentum Insurance underwrote benefits of up to R100,000 for
brain or spinal injuries and life cover for up to R100,000.
The Managing Director for Denis Insurance, Ross van Reenen, said: "The Denis
Sports Protector Plan offers financial benefits for defined sports accidents on
the playing field, during a match or practice session, at around of R50 a month.
Dental injuries covered by the Denis Sports Protector Plan include chipped
tooth, fractured tooth, tooth knocked loose, tooth knocked out and fractured
jaw. The dental cover ranges from about R300 for minor injuries to R15,000 for
more serious injuries."
Van Reenen said that the policy was not only limited to the rugby division.
"The cover for catastrophic injuries and life cover backed by Momentum make the
Denis Sports Protector Plan essential for any person involved in contact sport."
The Chief Executive Officer of SARPA, Piet Heymans said about the new
product: "As the Players' representatives, SARPA has a responsibility to ensure
that the wellbeing of its members and more particularly injury prevention is
given priority at all times. The Denis Sports Protector Plan addresses a very
specific niche by providing cover for dental and catastrophic injuries. It is
perfectly suited for professionals as well as for players at school and club
level, because it is very affordable."
