In 1970, the merger of two well-known South African insurance companies, SA Mutual Fire and General Insurance and Royal Insurance Group, resulted in the formation of Mutual & Federal Insurance Holdings Limited.

Mutual & Federal Insurance Holdings Limited became known simply as Mutual & Federal and, without doubt, one of the biggest short-term insurance companies in South Africa.

However, the evolution of Mutual & Federal started back in the early 19th century where insurance in South Africa was still in its infancy.

In 1831, the South African Fire & Life Assurance Company was founded in Cape Town and continued to grow and thrive for 64 years until its was acquired by another insurance company, London & Lancashire.

Almost 68 years later in 1962, London & Lancashire was in turn bought by the Royal Insurance Group and eight years later Mutual & Federal was born and is still going strong as one of South Africa's leading comprehensive short-term insurance carriers.

In 1998, Mutual & Federal bought 41 percent of the Royal Group in Zimbabwe while Old Mutual acquired the remaining 49 percent. Over the years Mutual & Federal has grown and adapted to suit its environment, and been responsible for introducing some innovative and client-friendly fixtures.

For instance, in the late 1980s it was Mutual & Federal that introduced drive-in motor claim centres making its services more accessible to clients and being able to handle insurance claims faster and more efficiently than ever before.

Today, Mutual & Federal is a household name in South African short-term insurance and is a company that prides itself on offering brokers, agents and clients friendly and efficient service as well as highly competitive insurance products.

In line with identifying and capitalising on growth into Africa, Mutual & Federal has also established presences in Botswana and Namibia and seems well prepared to continue to be a force in insurance in Southern Africa for many years to come.
