With most of the world looking at South Africa through rose tinted glasses thanks to the World Cup, it should be remembered that the country is still battling a major crime problem.
South Africa recently made the list of the five countries that have the highest numbers of insurance claims on a global scale.
The Managing Director of Journeys Travel Insurance, Patrick Chong, listed the countries with the highest numbers of claims in order to show the importance of travel insurance.
South African has the 'honour' of being the country with the most travel insurance claims for muggings and armed robberies.
Visitors to South Africa have thus been warned to be careful when traveling to South Africa and to take out sufficient cover.
The other four countries that appeared on the list were as follows:
Thailand - Chong said that out of all the countries, Thailand is the place where policyholders are most likely to make a claim.
Claims include for a wide number of reasons, including illness, traffic accidents and theft.
Mexico - Strangely, but understandably, Mexico has the highest number of incidences for claims on sunstroke.
Czech Republic - Pick pocketing is the unfortunate reason that this country appears on the list.
Caribbean Islands - The one danger facing visitors to the islands is insect bites, with some triggering allergic reactions that could even lead to hospitalizations.
"Many people are still tempted to scrimp on travel insurance, especially with short trips or visits to 'safe' destinations," said Chong. "But with cheap travel insurance now so widely and easily available, there is really no excuse to travel uninsured, especially given how common insurance claims are for certain destinations."
