April 27 - The South African Police has promised to delegate over R1.3 billion to secure the safety of participants and fans in the upcoming World Cup tournament.
However, the majority of South Africans believe that this is not enough and 89% said in a recent survey that they expected crime levels to rise.
The survey, commissioned by CIB Insurance Solutions, also showed that only 5% believed that crime would decrease.
"Current forecasts estimate that more than 350,000 tourists are expected to visit South Africa during the tournament," said the Sales Director at CIB, JonJon Smit.
"While we are certainly hoping that crime will not be an issue during the period, the reality is that with so many people in the country at one time the opportunity for petty crimes to be committed increases as well," he added.
South Africans may very well be underinsured when it comes to protecting their valuables, especially over the World Cup period.
They should therefore check that they are covered for loss of items such as laptops, phones, cameras, etc.
"With large crowds expected in public areas for the duration of the tournament, it is also easy to misplace or lose items," warned Smit. "While some of these items may be included under their policy's all-risk section, some may need to be specified in order to be covered."
Another area that South Africans should take care is on the road. There will be many drivers unfamiliar with the street rules and even the "right" side of the road.
"Besides taking extra care when driving, ensure your vehicle insurance is up to date and that you are covered for the full replacement value of your car," said Smit.
