March 27 - Did you know that if you unwittingly purchase a stolen second-hand car and then you try to claim on that vehicle your insurance company will not honour the policy. This is a serious issue in South Africa where more than 17,000 cars were stolen in 2006.
There is a distinct possibility that your used car could have been previously purloined especially if you buy the car in a private sale. The majority of used-car dealerships in South Africa would obviously check the history of their inventory but it is by no means a given.
To put your mind at ease is, however, a simple process. Simply phone a police station with the following information: the car's chassis number, the registration number, and the engine number - the police can immediately tell you if the vehicle is one of the thousands stolen on an annual basis.
If there is a discrepancy between the engine and chassis numbers it could also mean that the car was previously involved in a serious accident or that there are replacement parts.
The key point is that the onus is on the buyer to check up on these matters particularly from an insurance point of view.
