February 11 - We're constantly reminding our readers of the necessity to have ample car insurance in South Africa. But what if you have car insurance and your claim is denied? That would be an absolute disaster, but fortunately you can ensure that this never happens to you. Your car insurance policy will be superfluous if either of these two conditions are met: 1. You were personally negligent, and acted in a way that led to the claim in the first place. 2. Your vehicle was not roadworthy at the time of the accident. Let's say your car gets stolen, which is a common enough occurrence here in sunny South Africa these days. If it turns out that you left the keys in the ignition chances are your insurer will not honour your claim. Your negligence led to the theft. An even bigger problem is if your car is not deemed roadworthy. If you're driving in the rain with bald tires that are smoother than silk, and you then skid out of control and write off the car chances are that claim will be turned down as well. You have to take all reasonable precautions as the owner of the car to prevent damage or loss. If you drive with faulty brakes, under the influence of alcohol, or at night with no lights on then you're not holding up your end of the bargain, now are you? Insurance companies are not out to swindle you by any means, but at the same time they didn't become hugely successful enterprises by paying out every claim that came their way.
