December 12 - South Africans are being advised to stop for a moment and
redirect their attention from hectic holiday plans to a number of safety and
security measures to protect their homes while they are away this season.
Santam Insurance is warning homeowners that their properties may be
vulnerable to criminals and that they should take necessary steps to avoid shock
and financial loss when they return from their trips.
Santam believes that recognizing potential risks is the first step to
avoiding problems and outlines several things that homeowners may consider doing
while away.
First off, homeowners are encouraged to create the impression that someone is
in the house, even while there really is not. This could be done by avoiding
tell-tale signs such as overflowing rubbish bins, mail boxes that haven't been
emptied or newspaper deliveries piled up on the front mat.
Thieves look out for homes that are not occupied and will most certainly
target them as they are considered easy prey. Santam suggests that homeowners
freeze newspaper deliveries for the time they are away and request that
neighbours don't spread the word that they are on vacation. Even the most
innocent comment could reach the wrong ears unintentionally.
Another tip offered by Santam is to leave lights and the television running
all the time, to create the impression of occupancy. External sensors at night
could light up the property if anybody is snooping around.
Homes should also be secured inside and out. Investing in good locks are
paramount, while security deadlocks could be fitted on all main doorways.
Finally, Santam suggests not to make a break in job easy for potential
criminals. Homeowners should remove all ladders, tall objects and tools so that
climbing onto roofs or breaking windows is made more difficult.
