Hillary Clinton Promises Health Insurance For All

18 September - Sometimes it feels good to be South African, especially when one compares health insurance and general medical services with America. The USA luxuriates in the belief that it is the number one country in the world (number one by total mass perhaps, but not in many other categories that matter) yet health care in that country is in shambles.

It doesn't take another one-sided Michael Moore documentary to point out that the health insurance system in the USA is corrupt, elitist, and grossly expensive, but it is still worth watching Sicko for a good laugh at the expense of others. The American dream of universal health coverage, a given in every other first world country, seems out of reach - but not if Hillary Clinton has anything to do with it.

Ms. Clinton has tried this once before, when her husband was in the Oval Office, and she disastrously tried to implement health insurance for all. It was a grotesque failure that cost the Clintons a lot of momentum but she's still beating the same old drum (universal health coverage, not Bill one feels).

Hillary is now running for president and today she unleashed her health insurance vision on the media. Unsurprisingly it has changed little in this incarnation, and its chances of succeeding in a rampantly materialistic and me-first society seem very slim indeed.

More than 40 million Americans have no health insurance whatsoever, that's roughly 12.5% of the population. Clinton's new policy would force USA insurance firms to grant some form of coverage to everyone who applied, and would also prevent those companies from charging ill people with greater health care expenses more for their premiums. This smacks of rampant socialism!

The US people who vote don't really want to help those in need, however, as is clear from election results over the past eight years - especially not if it means that they will have less due to higher taxes. This quid pro quo relationship is not lost on the average American who cares little for his fellow man and nothing at all for the foreign man.

Just ask any American what they think is the greater tragedy: 3000 dead in 9/11, or 300,000 dead Iraqi civilians since their little "shock and awe" invasion?

There will never be universal health insurance in a country such as the USA, and if Clinton sticks to this as her main policy change she will also never become president of America.
