January 17 - Steffen Gilbert, former CEO of leading South African financial
services and insurance group, Santam, has joined Old Mutual Plc as head of the company's new Asia-Pacific operation, it was announced this week.
Gilbert will be based in Old Mutual's Asia-Pacific headquarters in Hong Kong,
where he is expected to spearhead the company's continued drive for expansion and growth throughout the region, with particular focus on developing new market opportunities.
Old Mutual's joint venture between its subsidiary Skandia and Beijing State
Asset Management, has evolved into the seventh-biggest life insurance company in China in terms of gross premiums. Skandia also offers investment funds to retail and institutional clients in Australia.
In addition, Old Mutual has a 26 percent stake in an Indian joint venture with
the Kotak Mahindra Group, which is represented in 55 cities and boast a direct sales force of 27 500.
Gilbert, who will report directly to Old Mutual CEO, Jim Sutcliffe, departed
from Santam in June last year by 'mutual agreement'. He was replaced by former Capital Alliance CEO, Ian Kirk.
