17 October - As a leading South African insurance guide we asked a leading financial services planner to provide some financial advice for young couples that have recently gotten married. Not surprisngly a little insurance is one of the recommendations.
According to an expert at Alexander Forbes a newlywed couple should definitely make sure that the basics are taken care of, and that means a will as well as a life insurance policy for the main breadwinner in the relationship. Couples also need to learn how to manage their debt, and to make sure that they are able to communicate effectively and openly about money matters.
Couples must agree on the amount of debt that they are taking on, and they must keep a close eye on debt because it can be a significant problem.
Another smart idea is to get your short-term insurance in the name of the partner who qualifies for the lowest premiums, and for some husbands this can mean an ego check. For instance, women drivers qualify for lower premiums if they insure via a company such as First For Women and so it might make sense to put those policies in your wife's name, provided she qualifies based on her record.
Marriage is a partnership, but you also need the assistance of experts along the way. Consider a financial planner if it is warranted, and always make sure to find a trustworthy source for big financial and insurance questions.
