Everyone wants the lowest-possible premiums for their South African insurance policies, but you must purchase those policies with care. Make sure you use a reputable insurer rather than some fly by night operation. If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is!
Certain insurance companies can offer lower prices on car insurance and other forms of short-term insurance because they deal directly with their clients. An example of this would be Dial Direct. But as the CEO of Sanlam points out one must first make sure that you are correctly covered before you look at the costs of that coverage. A very cheap premium may well mean you do not have comprehensive coverage.
The second factor that you need to take into consideration is that you are being insured by a reputable South African insurance company that will actually pay you out should you have a claim with them.
The obligation rests with you to see what all the costs are in terms of your policy. So the up-front costs might well be lower but your excess is much higher. A lot of people like to switch insurance companies, and this typically happens at the end of the year in the South African insurance market, but it does help to have a relationship with your insurer that is personal, so don't be too quick to switch.
