January 15 - South African motorists have a long history of getting behind the wheel while paraletic, but driving drunk is a fast path to losing your car insurance coverage. Next time you are under the influence and contemplating the drive home (what else are you going to do, climb in a taxi?) think twice.
It is a well known fact that if you don't drive yourself in a major city like Johannesburg you're not going to get anywhere, and if it's late at night you sometimes don't have a lot of options. That's why you should always go out with friends, and if you don't have any you should make some, becuse friends don't let friends drive drunk, or at least not always.
If you are a chief of police then driving drunk with an arsenal of weapons in your boot is okay, because other policemen can cover for you when you smash up your car and you don't need insurance because graft will ensure that you wind up with a new car as soon as you're out of the hospital.
But for those of us who work for a living and not for the state we need car insurance. Beware that you officially lose your cover if you are over the legal limit. That salient point is mentioned in your contract in one of those boring bits that most motorists never read.
Drivers who are caught over the limit face time in jail or a hefty spot fine, depending on who stops you and how much cash you can magically produce from the nearest ATM. If you are involved in an accident while drunk then the punishment is harder to escape. South African insurance companies are not nearly as forgiving as the local constabulary, so the moral is clear: don't drive recklessly when you're on the sauce.
