February 06 - A lot of South Africans make the same basic errors when it comes to our short-term insurance policies, namely we take them for granted and fail to update them. Here is a quick and essential insurance guide that provides you with a handy check list so that your car and home insurance policies remain current and correct.
1. As you acquire new possessions make sure they're covered as well.
It is easy to forget to update your insurance policy to include the new things that you have purchased, and which are valuable, since you bought the initial policy. Make sure these new items are included in your insurance coverage.
2. Keep your insurance payments up to date.
If your insurance policy is not paid for in full it will lapse and all the money that you have already spent in terms of prior premiums will be wasted. Don't fall behind with those insurance payments!
3. Home coverage requires that your security measures are updated as well.
If your house is protected by an alarm test it regularly. Make sure that the security company comes when called, and that the alarm functions when you leave the house. If your policy mentions other burglar-proofing features (bars on windows, razor wire on your walls - the usual South African extras) make sure those are still in use as well.
4. If you add accessories to your car, insure them too.
Perhaps you finally splurged on that new car stereo system or some other car accessory has been added since you purchased that insurance policy. Let the insurance company know of any significant changes, and if you have beefed up security for your car or home you must tell them, it could well lead to a reduction in your premiums.
